Today was Lily's and Juliette's four-month well baby visit to the pediatrician. I have a lot going on at work so Becky took them on her own. Based on yesterday's visit, we knew they wouldn't be getting their shots and instead the focus would be on re-evaluating their flu/cold/whatever.
At the appointment, Lily still had a stuffy nose and a mild cough. Her lungs sounded clear and she didn't seem to be in any distress. Juliette sounded like she had a bit of fluid in her lungs. An x-ray confirmed it. They gave her a session with a nebulizer which seemed to break up the congestion a bit. The doctor checked her CBC again and collected a mucus sample to send out for analysis. She recommended that we consider taking Juliette down to the Children's Hospital ER for evaluation. Becky called me, we discussed it, and decided that it was best to take her down.
The folks at Children's agreed that she wasn't in dire straights but thought she should be admitted, observed, and put on some oxygen to relieve her respiratory distress. Becky's friend Stacy volunteered to go down with her to provide moral support but she wasn't able to make it so her husband Jim came instead. Thanks Jim for being sticking around and being so great!
The folks at Children's gave Juliette another mucus swabbing to check for things like flu and RSV. It came back negative for flu but positive for RSV! As many of you know, RSV is rarely seen in the summer. How lucky are we?! RSV is dangerous because it causes the airways in the lungs to swell and fill with fluid. The nurse described the feeling to Becky as breathing through a straw filled with syrup. Poor babies. The nurse wanted a second opinion on the RSV test results so we're looking forward to the results from the test that the pediatrician sent to our local hospital for analysis. They're also going to send the swab on to the state for an official novel H1N1 influenza A analysis.
Our friend Celeste came over around 7:00 PM and hung out with Maia so I could go visit Becky and the girls at the hospital. Juliette was doing ok. Her blood-oxygen saturation level was regularly at 99-100% on a 1/4 liter cannula at 100% oxygen. She was very pale but was breathing easy and sleeping.
While I was at the hospital we noticed that Lily was wheezing a bit. It seemed to come and go when she coughed. Maybe she was just loosening up some congestion or maybe she is just starting to progress to Juliette's condition. Becky and Lily are staying with Juliette tonight so she'll keep a close eye on Lily's condition tonight and take her down to the ER if she worsens.
Oh, so here are the girls' stats from their pediatrician visit...
Lily weighs 8 lbs 13.5 oz and is 21.5 inches tall. On the normal baby charts she's below 3rd percentile in everything. In the adjusted preemie chart, she's around the 25th percentile. Not great but not too bad.
Juliette weighs 10 lbs 14.5 oz and is 22.5 inches tall. On the normal charts she's around 5th percentile. On the adjusted charts she's around 75th percentile for height and weight and 25-50th for head size. Pretty good!
