Psych!

Lily isn't coming home today. She needs a head ultrasound before discharge and that didn't get done last week. She is also struggling to eat a full serving. Instead she "snacks" and wakes up hungry ninety minutes later. The nurses think she should be there a bit longer. The doctor apparently agrees. Maybe it will be early next week instead. We'll see.

Juliette and Maia are doing well. Maia is teething like crazy! Poor girl is up a lot at night. Poor dad is up with her. ;-)

Becky is slowly-but-surely recovering from Friday night at the hospital. I think overnight feedings will be better when everyone is home.

Our friends Amanda and Jeremy came over yesterday and helped clean up the house and garage. They also brought over a great mac & cheese dish. Our friend Adam helped take some junk to the dump and brought over some ziti for our freezer stash. I think we'll be good on quick food for a while. THANKS GUYS!

Any day now

Becky and I attended training on the at-home apnea monitor that Lily is going to be on. She needs to be on this monitor as long as she's taking caffeine and for a few weeks afterward. The monitor is bulky and annoyingly loud. Hopefully she'll be off the caffeine and monitor soon!

Juliette had an eye exam today. She still has premature retinas but does not have ROP. That's a good thing. Her next eye exam will be in about 6 weeks.

Lily is being pushed to come home on Sunday. Becky and Juliette will be staying at the hospital tonight so Lily can get used to eating without the nasal-gastric feeding tube. She was recently switched to the Dr. Brown's bottles and it took her a day or two to get used to them. It seems she's finally doing ok at both bottle-feeding and nursing. She still has a way to go before she catches up to Juliette, though.

We were able to snap a few cell phone pictures of the girls together. Unfortunately, the iPhone camera is crap so they were all blurry. Here is a cute one of them doing some acrobatics...

Ups and Downs - Nursing woes and raves

So Lily and I have been working on the breastfeeding thing and it isn't going well.  It's so discouraging to me because right now that's the biggest thing keeping her in the hospital.  I think she'd come home much faster if I gave into doing just bottling but I really want the breastfeeding thing to work.  It's so much easier and less expensive and the bonding is really worth it.  I feel like I have to work a little harder to bond with Lily since I'm with Juliette 24/7 right now and I get down about it sometimes and feel like a bad mommy.  On the up side, the lactation consultants at Children's have been fantastic.  Rachel has been so helpful in offering suggestions and giving encouragement so I hope we can work through this.  She just gave me a nipple shield to try last week and it seems to help.  It requires Lily to do less work when eating with the goal of weaning from it when she's stronger.  By the way, Lily is now about 5 lbs, 6 oz!  She's growing up and looking pretty cute if you ask me.

Juliette is doing wonderful.  She's been home for over a week now and we went to a weight check today.  One week ago she was 5 lbs, 5 1/2 oz and they expect non-preemies to gain about an ounce a day (with preemies gaining a bit less) but in 7 days Juliette gained 12, yes TWELVE ounces!  That puts her at 6 lbs, 1 1/2 oz.  I'm so thrilled.  We're supposed to be giving her two bottles of breastmilk a day with a formula supplementation but at the most we're giving one right now (about 2 oz) so most of what she's gaining is from mommy's milk.  Awesome news.

I think tomorrow night Juliette and I will be spending at Children's so that Lily and I can work on the breastfeeding.  Wish us luck, it's going to be exhausting.

Oh, and I can't believe that the girls are 9 weeks old now!!!  They both just had their 2 month vaccinations so there's a lot of sleeping going on right now.

Up and Down

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! This is a very long post but this has been a dramatic few days and retelling this story will get old fast. The short version is: everyone is doing well. Ok, here goes the long version...

In my last post I mentioned that Lily had been moved to a different unit at the hospital. I visited Lily in her new room on Thursday after I got back from Denver. The room was amazing! It was a full hospital room except instead of a bed it had a crib. There was a sofa, small writing desk, TV, bathroom, etc. The new unit had a lot of wide-open spaces and guest facilities.

I noticed two other things right away after walking into the room:
1. That isn't my kid.
2. Wait. That is my kid?

Ok... really, I noticed that (a) she was GIGANTIC and (b) she had a nasal cannula. Huh?

Apparently her blood-oxygen saturation level (aka "sats") were dipping a lot on Wednesday night. The nurses didn't know what to do about it so they called downstairs to the NICU and were told to put her on oxygen. Of course we knew better: Lily's oxygen will dip down from the mid-90s to the mid-70s for a few seconds and then rebound on its own. Apparently the nurses in this unit aren't used to that kind of situation. They all commented on how tiny Lily was and how they don't get babies that small.

Needless to say, Becky and I were disappointed by this setback. Lily had been doing so well. We were taken aback when we asked about what her oxygen requirements were. She was on 21% (room air) at 1/2 liter. Huh? Room air? Why is she on a cannula? It seems the nurses would just turn her up a bit so she would stay in the high-90s. This would prevent her monitor from going off. Unnecessary, excess oxygen can also prevent her eyes from developing normally. We weren't happy.

At one point yesterday afternoon while Becky was nursing Lily, her sats fell very low because she was not breathing well. A lactation consultant was in the room and had Becky stop nursing so Lily could catch her breath. Lily's nurse came in when her monitors beeped off and turned her oxygen up to 100%, made sure Lily recovered, and left the room. Becky and the lactation consultant didn't realize this was going on so I went out to find out when they were going to turn her down since she was sat'ing at 100% (95% is the max allowed when they are on oxygen). Lily's nurse wasn't around so another nurse said "I'll let her know." The nurse didn't show up for 10 more minutes.

Thankfully the lactation consultant who was there is also an RN and she told me to just turn Lily's oxygen down. We got it all the way back down to room air and her sats stayed in the mid-90s. Sure this incident needed some intervention but the same thing would happen in the ICC and Lily would come out of it on her own when she remembered unlatched and started breathing. This was so not cool. This kid doesn't need oxygen. She needs nurses who will pay closer attention to her. Now we really weren't happy.

Skip to this morning. Becky shows up and Lily's oxygen is at 30%. Why? "She was beeping a lot and turning her up made it stop." Uh. Turning it up put her at 99%. Becky's aunt (a nurse from Abbott) stopped by to visit and was also surprised with the situation. Becky asked the nurse on duty if they would turn Lily down and they did. She did fine at 21%. Again, she would occasionally go "up and down" and "beep off" but she always came out of it on her own. Again... Why is she on oxygen? We were starting to get the picture... it was time for Lily to go back to the ICC where she could get proper attention.

Becky went down and spoke with Lily's doctor. She immediately wrote orders to transfer Lily back to the ICC. I'm sure the nurses at the other unit are fantastic with the kids they're used to who don't have special monitoring needs and other prematurity-related issues. It was clear, though, that Lily was just too much hassle for them to deal with.

Ok, so remember I said Lily was gigantic? Well she was as heavy as Juliette at her weigh-in on Thursday. HUH!? She was as puffy as a beachball. Turns out she really needed to stay on the diuretic (Lasix) that was discontinued earlier in the week. We discussed this with her nurse and the lactation consultant and they agreed. When the doctor rounded on Thursday she put her back on Lasix. Within 6 hours she peed out over 100 grams. That's a lot for a baby that only weighs 2kg. When we visited at 9:00 PM she was already looking better. Ugh. Poor girl must have been so uncomfortable. At her weigh-in this morning she was down 100g. Much better.

Becky asked Lily's doctor about what could be causing her to retain fluid. She was very quick to say it was just prematurity. She pointed out that even though Lily and Juliette are identical, Lily's body still has a lot more developing to do before it catches up to Juliette and we shouldn't compare them. She seemed confident that Lily would be off the drugs within a month but warned that she may go home on them.

Speaking of going home, Lily was also put back on a bit of caffeine to help stimulate her breathing. It's possible that she would go home on caffeine and if that's the case she'll have to be on an apnea monitor. Blah. The silly apnea monitor doesn't monitor her ox-sats, just her heart and respiratory rates. Even though she seems to hold her breath for a moment (periodic breathing), she's technically not apnic. It would be very annoying to lug around that monitor. Hopefully she'll be off caffeine sooner rather than later.

Lily had been moved back down to the ICC by the time Becky visited tonight. She's doing well and has already had the cannula removed. Unfortunately we won't be able to enjoy the fantastic room upstairs but we're happy that Lily will be getting the attention she needs!

Juliette is doing very well. She nurses almost non-stop but then so did Maia in the beginning. Maia was very whiny this week. She's starting to get into that terrible-toddler frame of mind and throw a tantrum when she doesn't get her way. I think it's being exacerbated by Juliette's homecoming and my business trip. I'm hoping that she'll get back to normal now that I'm home and can pay attention to her. Today was much better than yesterday. Maybe by Monday things will be great.

Becky's neighbor from childhood dropped by today to drop off a yummy dinner. It was very tasty and very appreciated. Maia ate her entire plate with no complaints. That makes it a bonafide a winner in my book. Thanks Jo!

Our friends Sara and Matt for stopped by (at separate times) today to pick up some clothes and other things they let us borrow. Our thanks go out to them (again).

Ok... three pages is long enough. Good night.

Help

Some good friends of ours have offered to organize help for Ben and me during the transition time of bringing the girls home.  We're so fortunate to have friends and family like all of you - it will be a tough adjustment having both girls home so while not expected, any help is certainly appreciated!

They have asked us to put the information on the blog so here it is.

Ben and Becky are in the process of bringing home Juliette and Lily. It's a huge transition: if you've ever had one baby, imagine twice the work plus another sweet girl begging for your undivided attention. It'd be really great if we could all help Ben and Becky focus on caring for the babies and helping Maia adjust. The next few months of transition may be really draining emotionally and physically (but oh, so rewarding) as the Arks truly become a Family of Five.

Some specific ways we can help are:

* Meals: They have no dietary restrictions. Frozen meals are welcome, but please indicate that the meal is frozen, so they can make other plans for that evening's meal. If you can't make a meal, drop off some take-out (I know they love Thai) or order them a pizza. Remember, they're feeding two adults and one toddler who loves fruit.

* House Cleaning: Think vacuuming, laundry, dishes, and all the other mundane chores that drive us crazy. From firsthand experience, there is nothing as wonderful as having someone else iron three week's worth of work shirts so Mommy can catch a much-needed nap. (Note from Becky: don't expect to really iron because we really don't)

* Outdoor Yard Care: Mostly mowing. I know they bag the clippings, so there's that. But what a quick way to give Ben some time to dote on his girls!

* Toddler Entertainment or Baby Holding: Not for anyone who is sick please!

Please visit http://www.whatfriendsdo.com/TheArks to sign up!

THANK YOU AMANDA AND SARAH!

Happy Birthday!

Today is Becky's birthday! I'm in Denver for work; it's the second year I've missed her birthday. What a bad husband I am! She has been doing a wonderful job taking care of Maia and Juliette while visiting Lily at the hospital while I'm away. So go ahead and send some birthday love Becky's direction!

It looks like Becky hasn't had a chance to update the blog lately. Things have been pretty busy since Juliette came home. Here is a quick update...

The ICC is full and Lily has been moved to a newly renovated area at Children's. She has a big private room which is much nicer than her ICC room. We'll really miss the great nurses at the ICC, though.

One nice thing about this new room is that Maia can come visit! That should make weekends much easier. A bad thing is that Juliette can't spend the night which would make pre-homecoming nursing nights very difficult. Maybe they can make an exception since they booted us out of the ICC.

Juliette had her first pediatrician appointment this afternoon. Becky really likes our new pediatrician and said the appointment went really well.

I hear the weather in Minneapolis was weirdly hot today. Pretty much the same in Denver. It will be nice to be home in a couple of days. Hopefully it will cool down by the time I get home.

Enough for now. Typing on the iPhone "keyboard" is too tiring. Please join me in wishing Becky a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Juliette is home!!

55 days later. Things are good, will update with details soon!

Hurry up and...

Yesterday was was a rushed blur. Here is quick update:

I will be out of town Monday night through Thursday afternoon on a work trip. Becky spoke with the nurses and doctor yesterday about Juliette coming home. We want to try to schedule it so I am home to help. The doctor said it would probably be early next week. Well that doesn't work since I will be out of town. Our options were to just deal with it and or take out her feeding tube. Taking out the tube means she would need to be bottle-fed during the night or Becky could spend the night at Children's to nurse Juliette. So guess what? Becky spent the night at Children's.

I spoke with Becky this morning. Juliette was up a lot last night. Apparently she's addicted to her pacifier but doesn't quite know how to keep it in for more than a few minutes at a time. Ugh. Poor Beck.

If all goes according to plan, Juliette will have her carseat test this afternoon. If she passes then the only hurdle left is feeding/weight gaining. The doctor wants to make sure she is eating well and gaining weight without the tube. I don't think that will be a problem but who knows?

So hopefully Juliette gained weight well yesterday and will do well tomorrow, too. If she does, she should be coming home on Saturday. If not, we'll be very frustrated because it will be another case of hurry up and... wait.

Just a quick update

I was at the hospital all day today.  Juliette nursed at 8, 11, 2 and 5 and did great all 4 times.  She didn't even have her feeding tube in during that period (because she took it out) so it was nice to see her beautiful little face.  Ben gave her her first bottle tonight and she ate like a champ.  Usually her feeding is over a half hour period and Juliette downed it in 5 while completely asleep. She'll get another bottle overnight so we'll see how that goes!

Lily is doing pretty well.  It turns out though that she seems to be having a reflux problem which might be contributing to the breastfeeding issues we're having.  She's arching her back and looking like she's getting stuff up then swallowing again.  I hope we can work through it.

Tomorrow I have an infant CPR class and then on Friday we have a car seat test for Juliette to make sure it's safe for her to come home in.

I think the end of Juliette's Children's stay is coming.  Stay tuned!

Two huge milestones

I got into Children's this morning to find Lily without her nasal cannula!  She had apparently been doing so well on room air with her 1/4 liter oxygen that the doctor thought he'd try her without any oxygen.  She did fabulously all day and I am SO excited!  For awhile I was worried that she would even come home on oxygen but not anymore.  Now if we can only get feeding down.

The second big piece of news is that Juliette hit the big FIVE pounds today!  What a big girl!  She's growing so fast but it seems like just yesterday that they were born.  She's starting to get a lot more vocal when she's upset (usually because her pacifier fell out) and she is much more wakeful than she used to be.  After I feed her she generally just hangs out and stares at everything.  It is pretty cute!

Tomorrow I'm planning on being at the hospital all day.  The doctor wrote the order for Juliette to breastfeed whenever she wants and to not get supplemented if she doesn't eat much so that requires me to be there.  They're also wanting us to start her on a bottle because bottle-fed babies go home faster and because she'll have to be supplemented twice a day for a little while with some breastmilk fortifier.  Anyway, I'm getting up at 6 am tomorrow and will be at the hospital by Juliette's 8 am feeding.  I'll stay through her 5 pm feeding then come home, then go back with Ben for her 8 pm feeding - except for that he'll give her her first bottle.  We will see how it goes!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms that read this blog!  Being a mother is tough work and it's nice to have a day to recognize that.  You are all awesome!

Today was pretty low key.  Ben made breakfast this morning which was nice and we pretty much stayed at home for most of the day.  We started moving my office downstairs to make room for the girls when they come home.  I've still got to figure out what to do with all of my clothes though - I think my dresser can fit in our bedroom but I don't know that the stuff in the closet can fit in the bedroom closet!  We'll find out soon.

We did go to Pottery Barn to look at crib bedding and the set we liked was catalog only.  We haven't decided whether we'll buy it yet or not.

This evening we went to the Old Spaghetti Factory with our friends Adam and Holli and their kids Noah and Abby.  I love OSF so it was nice to get out and it's been awhile since we've seen them so we had a good time catching up.

I went to see the girls this evening and they're doing great.  Juliette nursed wonderfully (of course) and Lily didn't but that's okay.  Lily's oxygen levels are slowly decreasing which is great news.  She's been on a nasal cannula at .5 liters for the past couple of days and today she's on .25 liters at room air (which is the best you can be!)  Pretty soon I think we'll be looking at a cannula-free baby!

Tomorrow is Monday again; I look forward to what the week has in store.

A good day

Today we celebrated Mother's Day by going out to brunch with my parents, grandparents and brother.  It was nice to see everyone!  My grandparents just returned from Florida (where they hibernate for the winter) so it had been quite awhile since they'd seen Maia.  She was being her usual charming self and we had a lot of fun.  Plus we went to Famous Dave's which is yummy so that doesn't hurt either!

Maia took a great nap this afternoon while Ben mowed the lawn and installed a tree swing for her.  She wasn't too sure about it when we tried it out later but she did swing for a little bit.  Hopefully it grows on her!  It'll be a nice outside activity this summer.

This evening our friends Matt and Meghan came over with their 2 month old (Allyson) so it was great to see them.  We had dinner and they brought some French Silk Pie then Matt was nice enough to offer to stay with Maia while Ben and I went to the hospital.  Thanks guys!

Lily and Juliette are doing great.  Juliette nursed really well and Lily actually latched on and nursed for a little bit as well!  Both of them have snotty noses right now so it's difficult for Lily to breathe while breastfeeding especially when she has a nasal cannula stuck in there.  We'll try again tomorrow!  Lily's oxygen levels were fantastic this evening also once we got there and started holding her.  I hope she keeps it up!  They do send babies home on oxygen if necessary but I'm hoping she's off before she gets home.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day and we don't have any plans so it might just be a nice, low key day.

Anniversary

I can't believe that Ben and I have been married for 5 years.  It's really strange to think that 5 years ago right now we were partying it up having no idea what was really in store for us just a few years later.

The girls are doing well.  A lactation consultant came to visit me today while I was nursing Juliette and that was fantastic.  It's really nice to have the support and the suggestions - she had a lot of both and it was much appreciated.  Juliette replaced a whole feed at 11:00 but didn't nurse hardly at all at 2 - she was just too sleepy!  I tried to nurse Lily as well but she wasn't up for it.  Hopefully she'll catch on soon.

My uncle and aunt (Jan and Nancy) came to visit the girls this afternoon.  It's their anniversary as well so it was nice to see them and congratulate them.  Nancy held Juliette for a few minutes which I think she thoroughly enjoyed!

My mom came over this evening to watch Maia while Ben and I went to dinner.  It was nice to go out just the two of us.  We went to Benihana and although it's not the most romantic atmosphere we really enjoy the food.

I also talked to the "going home" coordinator at Children's about what to do with daycare when Juliette comes home.  She said (contrary to some of what we'd heard before) to go ahead and leave Maia in daycare and just observe stringent hand-washing.  She said it should make life easier coming to visit Lily during the days and getting used to having twins at home.  I don't know yet what we'll do but that option sure is appealing to me!

Lily's trying to catch up!

So I got to the hospital today and Lily was finally in a crib!  I'm so excited because it just makes it so much easier to pick her up and do her cares and everything!  She was bundled really tight because she was having just a bit of trouble maintaining her temperature but overall she did well today.

I was in time for Juliette's 11:00 feeding but she was pretty much asleep and wouldn't wake up so she got her whole tube feeding.  I didn't try at 2 because the doctor's orders were only to breastfeed twice a day and I knew I'd be back this evening.  Lily and I tried but she wanted nothing to do with it at the time.  Hopefully we can get on track soon!  The doctor rounded at around 3:00 and changed the order to allow me to breastfeed Juliette whenever I want so that is excellent news!

My friends Sara and Celeste stopped by the hospital today to meet the girls.  Sara brought her kids and thankfully, the Sibling Play area took them while us girls went to see the babies.  Thank goodness - I originally had thought the Play area was family-specific but it apparently applies to friends as well.  Sara also brought us dinner and Celeste brought us an adorable basket filled with baby stuff.  It was nice to see them!  Celeste also came over in the evening while Ben and I went to the hospital.

Tomorrow is Ben and my 5 year anniversary.  I can't believe it's already been 5 years!  We're going out to dinner while my mom watches Maia tomorrow so I'm really looking forward to that.  It's also my aunt Nancy and uncle Jan's anniversary tomorrow and coincidentally, they're coming to the hospital to visit the girls!

Lots going on

As Ben mentioned yesterday we have a lot going on and a lot of things to work out logistically.  Most everything won't be easy decisions either so that sucks but we'll figure things out.

The girls are doing great.  I'm not sure if I mentioned that Juliette tested positive on her MRSA test again (you may recall that both girls were positive 2 weeks ago and last week both were negative) so that is unfortunate but aside from that they're both wonderful.  Juliette has been nursing really well so I'm hoping that means that she'll get to come home soon.  I think she will!  Lily has yet to latch really so we're working on it.

I'm hoping Lily gains a good amount of weight tonight so that she can come out into a crib tomorrow.  They usually wait until babies reach 1800 g to take them out of the isolette into a crib so if she gains 30g tomorrow she'll be ready.  I'm excited - it will be nice to have her easily accessible like Juliette already is!

Both girls had their eye exams this morning.  They had them 2 weeks ago as well to check for ROP (badly premature retinas) and neither girl had it and they still don't.  If they did, they'd monitor them closely and possibly do a laser surgery to fix their eyes.  Luckily we don't have to go there at this point!

My friend Stacy came to visit today so it was nice to catch up with her and commiserate over our preemie babies.  Her son Finn is now at 7-something pounds yet is almost 4 months old so that's pretty amazing!  They've come a long way.

So many decisions

Becky and I visited the babies tonight. Jim and Sue came to visit and were already there. Sue held Lily for a few minutes and Becky nursed Juliette. Once again Juliette ate well and didn't get any supplemental feeding via her tube.

According to the nurses, Lily did very well with her oxygen last night and was on 21% (room air) for a while. She got her cannula volume turned down to 3/4 of a liter/minute and was doing well on that. Her oxygen levels bumped back up to the high 20s. Hopefully she'll adapt well to the lower volume and continue to progress well.

The girls have a follow-up eye exam tomorrow to check their retinal development. Hopefully that goes well--the last one was good.

We're starting to finally put together our thoughts and plans for what to do when the girls come home. It's very tricky. The more we talk about it, the more confused and frustrated we get.

First: Maia and daycare... The nurses at Children's have been saying we shouldn't have Maia in daycare when the girls come home because they can't handle the viruses Maia would bring home. Oh, but Becky will need to be available at Children's so she can continue to nurse Juliette before she comes home. Oh, but Children's sibling daycare won't take kids under two years old without someone (family, friend, etc) to supervise. Huh. How do we make that work? Becky is going to talk to the "going home coordinators" tomorrow to see what they say.

Second: Becky and work... This is tough. Becky likes to work. She also wants to be a mom. Becky's FMLA time expires at the end of the month. Will her work let her extend her leave? If so and she goes back, we'd have to look at a nanny since the girls can't be in daycare. You can imagine how much that would cost. It looks like Becky is going to have to talk to her bosses and make some tough decisions.

Third: Coming home... Juliette will probably come home in the next couple of weeks. If Maia is home, how do we take care of both of them at the same time? Maia is not used to being home. She's not used to sharing our attention. I'll probably need to take a few days off work to  support Becky during those first few days and to help Maia transition. Then what do we do when Lily comes home? We're thinking about hiring a local teenager or college student as a "mother's helper" to keep Maia entertained and help out with some light housework... at least until the twins are a bit older and have their feeding/sleeping routines established. It took Maia until about 10 weeks before she was at that point. Being in the NICU and ICC has helped to already establish regular feeding/sleep patterns for the twins so maybe they'll adjust to home much faster than Maia did. We'll see.

Fourth: The van... It's ten years old and has 120k+ miles on it. It's doing fine but isn't the best vehicle for loading a toddler and two infant carriers. We've talked about getting a replacement van that will better handle the twins. I'm not eager to pick up a car payment. Maybe we should just try to find a way to make it work with the current van as long as possible. Another tough decision.

Fifth: Becky's office... err.. the twins' room... Ok, so Becky got to keep her office when Maia came home and I got punted to the basement. Well now we need to put her office somewhere else so the girls can have a room. Thankfully it's big enough to hold two cribs, a dresser, chair, etc. Well, where do we put Becky's stuff? Probably the basement. Argh. The house is quickly going to feel small.

So many tough decisions... at least we're finally starting to put together some plans.

Monday and a virus

Apparently this website has a virus which is super annoying because I don't know how to fix it.  I haven't had any problems with the site but Ben has twice!  I haven't heard of anyone else having an issue so hopefully nobody else did.

I had my 6 week post partum appointment today.  Dr. Gosen said that everything looks good and that my scar is healing nicely.  I'm free to start exercising or doing whatever so that is good news!

I went to see the girls this afternoon and my grandparents stopped by to meet them.  They had been in Florida all winter and they just got back so it was nice to introduce them!  I also tried to feed Juliette but she wasn't too into nursing for that feeding.

Mom came over and Ben and I went to the hospital again tonight.  This time Juliette latched right on and ate like a champ so they ended up not giving her any supplemental feedings!  Hopefully she will keep it up.

Furniture, Nursing

Today was spent hunting down baby furniture because we've finally realized that these girls are coming home whether we like it or not!  We went to Babies R Us and still don't love their furniture selections.  We tried Pottery Barn and they were really expensive and not really our style.  We ended up back at USA Baby in Richfield (where we got Maia's furniture) and bought two cribs, a dresser and a nightstand.  One crib is in stock so at least we can get it home and set up before Juliette comes home.  Even if Lily comes home before the other crib comes in they can share for awhile!

Crib Photo

I headed to the hospital after dinner to try and nurse Juliette again.  She did awesome - I'd say she got a good 9-10 minutes of sucking and swallowing in.  The nurse still gave her half a feeding through her tube but I'm not convinced she needed it.  I remember Maia only ever took 10 minutes at the most to finish eating entirely!

Tomorrow I have my 6 week post partum appointment and then plan to spend the rest of the afternoon at the hospital.

Runny noses

Maia is sick.  She has some sort of hacking cough and a perpetually runny nose.  She is mostly acting fine (except a little bit whiny) but she sounds pretty awful!  I hope she's over it soon because it's waking her up at night.

Today we didn't do a whole lot.  I woke up early with Maia and let Ben sleep.  We had breakfast, played, cleaned up a little bit and she sat with me while I pumped.  I finally figured out how to entertain her while I'm pumping - sit her on my lap and show her kiddie youtube videos!  She's never really been much of a TV watcher (we haven't really let her and she mostly doesn't seem to care anyway) but she was mesmerized by these videos and I welcome it.  Otherwise she just wanders around whining because I can't play with her.  It's a win-win!  This afternoon we headed over to our friend Jeremy and Amanda's house to celebrate Jeremy's birthday.  It was nice to get away for a little while!

This evening I headed to the hospital to try to breastfeed Juliette.  It went pretty well - the doctor ordered her on a "breastfeeding protocol" which means that how well she eats from nursing will determine how much milk she gets via her feeding tube.  Today she did well enough to only get half of her regular feeding so that is great news.  In other news, they no longer are checking her blood oxygen levels!  This is the number that I always stared at and now I don't have to.  They think she's doing well enough to not need it but they'll still check 3x/week.  Lily is doing well too - gained 45g yesterday so she's up to 3 lbs, 11 oz!    I held both girls today for a little while so it was nice to snuggle.

Tomorrow we're going to go look for baby furniture.  We've finally come to terms with the fact that they ARE coming home sooner or later so we better get our butts ready.  It's starting to freak me out since I think Juliette will be home sooner than I think.

Ben is home!

Ben got home this morning around 6:30 and boy was it good to see him.  He went into Maia's room and I heard "daddy!" so I know she was happy to have him home.  He couldn't believe how different she was, just within a week.  I remember thinking the same thing when he took her out to Seattle for a few days.

Since Ben was on the redeye flight last night, he went to bed when he got home and I took Maia to daycare then went to the hospital.  Juliette gained 20g and is now 4 lbs, 2 1/2 oz and LIly is 3 lbs, 8 1/2 oz.  Grow babies grow!  Lily needs to gain another couple hundred grams and then she'll be in a crib like her big sister!

Juliette and I practiced nursing again today.  She latches on pretty well but it's fairly sporadic at this point though I'm sure we'll both get better at it soon.

We're going to a birthday party tomorrow afternoon for our friend Jeremy so that should be something fun to break up the day.
